That Fast First-Week Drop? Here's What It Really Is
Some of it is water โ and that's a genuine, useful signal, not a trick.
A lot of people see a bigger drop on the scale in their first week than in any week that follows, and it's worth understanding why so it doesn't set the wrong expectations for week three and beyond.
Lowering sugar and overall calorie intake โ which happens naturally as you shift onto the protocol โ reduces your body's glycogen stores. Glycogen is stored in the body along with water, so when glycogen drops, some water weight drops along with it. That's a real, measurable change, and it's also a genuine sign of metabolic change getting underway.
What it isn't is a preview of your weekly rate of loss going forward. The steadier, more sustainable fat loss that follows typically happens at a slower pace than that first-week number suggests. If week two or three shows a smaller number than week one, that's not a slowdown โ it's the more representative rate, now that the initial water shift has already happened.
Early water loss is real. It's just not the whole story, and knowing that up front helps you stay steady through the weeks that follow rather than getting discouraged by a normal, expected pattern.
