Bored of Your Shake? Here's What You Can (and Can't) Add

Change the flavor, not the formula — a few additions work well, and a few undo the point.

By the second or third week, flavor fatigue is a real thing — even a shake you liked on day one can start to feel repetitive by day fifteen. The good news is there are ways to change things up without working against the protocol.

Fruit and juice are worth holding off on during the reset period and until you reach your goal, since both add sugar and calories that work against exactly what the small-meal and shake structure is trying to control. It's the one category of addition that meaningfully undoes the point of the shake.

What does work: unsweetened cocoa powder for a chocolate variation, flavor extracts (vanilla, almond, peppermint), spices like cinnamon, a splash of decaf coffee for a mocha-style variation, or stevia- and monk fruit–sweetened flavor drops if you want more sweetness without added sugar. All of these change the experience of drinking your shake without changing what it's actually delivering nutritionally.

If you're feeling shake fatigue, rotate through two or three of these combinations rather than sticking to one flavor profile for the whole month. Small variety goes a long way toward keeping the habit sustainable.
